Finding Solitude
Without going into the long story (it has been too long since a post), I recently took a full-time job again in software. The company has offices in Seattle (which is where I work most of the time), but most of my team and other people I interact with are in Utah, in the Salt Lake valley. This means I fly out to Utah for about a week every 4-6 weeks. Not a bad gig being a skier.
I extended my trip this week to include Saturday so I could get some turns in. I chose Solitude, and I wasn’t disappointed. Spoke to a patroller who saw me coming out of the trees and he recommended an area that required a 15 min hike (at 9000’, this isn’t as easy as it sounds). But I did it, and had some great north-facing tree skiing.

Back in September, I was out here for a couple days and managed to drive through the canyons and check out the pretty fall colors on the east side of the Wasatch.

A view from the office.

I love how lush Seattle is, but I also love the Utah landscape. The mountains contrast sharply against the ski and the valley. The sun is very bright. The sun in February feels brighter and warmer than Seattle’s brightest (not counting the eye-level fall/winter sun in Seattle).

The thing that I haven’t gotten used to when I’m in Utah is how dry it is. Water is not abundant like in Seattle. The neti pot is first on the packing list. But hopefully the little bit of jogging I’m doing at 4000’ will go a little bit further than in Seattle (not a fan of running).
I mostly enjoy traveling for work. The alone time helps me recharge (naturally introverted), but I definitely miss lolo and my friends in Seattle when I’m out here, so I guess I’m not completely an introvert.
