Wildfires & Sunsets
Wild fires are currently raging over about 600 acres on the Olympic Peninsula to our west. It makes for some spectacular wild fires. There are no clouds in the strict sense of the word in the area. All the “clouds” are actually smoke from the fires. Ran home after work to get my camera and tripod for some pictures from Sunset Hill Park in Ballard. Posted from...

Rivalries
I managed to catch the Bayer Leverkusen vs Dortmund match this past week. I was surprised by the attendance there. In a stadium holding 30,000 fans, 7,000 seats were taken by the visiting team. In MLS, there’s a limit of 500 seats to traveling fans. While this limit is hardly reached for most games throughout the league, here in the PNW, the rivalries between SEA, VAN, and PDX can easily...

Dad
The first time my dad said “I love you” to me on the phone will stick with me forever. It had been a few years since moving to Seattle and neither of us had that thing that makes it easy to just pick up the phone to call a friend or loved one and make conversation. In person, we share that quality that allows people to feel at ease with us. Our phone calls usually led to stifled...

Beaches and Explosions
Lolo and I took a trip to beautiful and sunny Westport, WA this past weekend on a whim, expecting to fight crowds when the state parks online reservation system said there was one ADA campsite available at Twin Harbors State Park. Much to our surprise, when rolling around the campground there were many camp sites to be found and we picked one that was relatively quiet (for a fireworks weekend)...

Finding Solitude
Without going into the long story (it has been too long since a post), I recently took a full-time job again in software. The company has offices in Seattle (which is where I work most of the time), but most of my team and other people I interact with are in Utah, in the Salt Lake valley. This means I fly out to Utah for about a week every 4-6 weeks. Not a bad gig being a skier. I extended my trip...

Cookie Sweat Shop
Every year, Lauren makes cookies for her clients (and for people who return their tins from the previous year). She chops nuts like a maniac. There’s usually flour all of the kitchen for the whole day. We can’t eat dinner at the kitchen table. Cookie dough of all colors and consistencies is created. Once the temp heats up in there, we start to sweat and the delirium...

Comcast vs. Level 3, or: how I learned to stop...
I don’t want to pretend to know that much about the internets (series of tubes full of fun stuff like youtubes, tweeters, etc), especially when it comes down to the innards, backbones, trunks, etc., and the politics around it. But I did take lots of human anatomy courses. Unfortunately, that didn’t cover this. But I do have a gut feeling about what’s going on with Comcast and...

dvorak
It’s been super frustrating to try to learn how to type again with a new keyboard layout. Been wanting to learn the dvorak layout for some time now, but never made enough time or effort.  I will make a serious go of it this time. I picked up a typing training program and plan to get to a usable level by work on Monday. Posted from smooshy.com | Comment »

The Start of Christmas in Seattle
See and download the full gallery on posterous This is the first year we went to the tree lighting downtown. Photos' best friend
My latest business write-off. It’s been a good year. Want to make sure my data stays safe, so when it came time to spend some money, I decided a redundant storage device would be a good investment. I already back up with Time Machine, make a daily snapshot of my drive with SuperDuper, and upload my important files to Mozy.com and Dropbox, but my iMac, with it’s limited storage...

How to take a creepy photo of yourself in 6 easy...
Everyone’s been asking me lately how they can take awesome creepy photos of themselves with their iPhone. With these 6 easy steps, you can be eliciting gasps and grunts and “woahs” in no time! 1. Do it right after you wake up, half way through your first cup of coffee. The puffiness will really convey a lack of circulation (edema!), and the dawn light is just perfect. 2....

My stash
Lolo and I spent a good amount of time in Jersey in August and I had developed a taste for the crack juice they sell out there. Every morning went something like this, “Oh look, Dunkin’ Donuts! (tire screech).” Afternoon, “Hey, is that a Dunkin’ Donuts? (engine revs, whiplash).” Midnight would roll around, “I wonder if there’s a Dunkin’ Donuts...

The fog is burning off
The morning fog is burning off and the sun is getting ready to toast us on both sides. Our spending time with friends at this beach house on Case Inlet in the south sound and having a great time is only affected by the fact that my laptop is staring at me with it’s pulsing white eye, an unfinished project on the hard drive with a looming deadline that is barely attainable if I put in more...

My buddy, Baxter
Every once in a while I get to pretend I have a dog for a week or two at a time. It’s nice to loan them out instead of owning one, but one day I will have a buddy of my own. In the meantime, for the next couple weeks, I’ll take Baxter out for at least 2 walks every day, have someone excitedly great me as I walk in the door, and have an office mate that only stretches and groans every...

2 weeks without a car
Two weeks ago, I sold my car. I bought the car after moving to the house we bought down south, after being a one-car household for over a year in Greenwood. I spent a bit of money on the car to buy it and to fix it up. It made me happy while I had it and when I didn’t have to drive it to the shop for the umpteenth (wow, that clears spellchecker and now I find out it’s a real word. mind...
